Professor Joanne Pope Melish opened the summer lecture series at Deerfield. Her lecture was a great complement to her scholarship, and the question and answer portion of the evening was facinating as attendees brought up specific stories about slavery in New England. It was another reminder to her point that New England was a society with clusters of slaves in certain areas; it was different from the history of the south–a slave socity. Nevertheless, the numbers of slaves in each New England state (all thirteen original colonies had slavery) provided great historical insights to her points about New England slavery.
