What would you do if your favorite book character came to life within the pages!? In Between the Lines by Jodi Picoult and her daughter, Samantha Van Leer, fairytales are seen in a whole new dimension. Delilah is a high school student who comes across an old fairytale in her school library one day and feels a connection with the story; she becomes obsessed with it and knows the book from cover to cover in a matter of days. The twist in this story is that the characters in the book have a completely different life when the pages are closed. Life in the book is just one big performance when the pages are open until one day when Delilah hears Oliver, one of the main characters, speaking to her from the pages. After the relationship between the human Delilah and the character Oliver develops, they try several plans to find a way for Oliver to come out of the pages and into Delilah’s world. I thought this story was new and entertaining; however, I found some of the phrases or descriptions to be cliché and sometimes childish. Nevertheless, it was refreshing to be able to live in a world of fairytales with the takeaway that dreams really can come true.
