French for “This is not a pipe” René Magritte’s message in this painting is nothing but controversial. Painted between 1928 and 1929 when Magritte was 30 years old; ironically, this picture shows a pipe. This confusing statement gets soon clear by acknowledging the author’s point of view:
“The famous pipe. How people reproached me for it! And yet, could you stuff my pipe? No, it’s just a representation, is it not? So if I had written on my picture “This is a pipe,” I’d havebeen lying!”
That is why this painting shows the modernist aspect of presenting thoughts and believes in a nonlinear fashion.
