She’s the Man, a hit movie of our time period made in 2006, is based on a Shakespeare comedy, The Twelfth Night, which dates back to the early 1600’s. The plots of She’s the Man and The Twelfth Night are extremely similar. In She’s the Man Duke enlists Sebastian, the disguised Viola, to help him obtain Olivia’s attention. In The Twelfth Night Duke Orsino enlists Cesario to help him win over Olivia’s love. In both the movie and the play the main characters share the same names, which makes it easy to see the resemblances of the love triangle. Duke Orsino is in love with Olivia, who is in love with a disguised Viola, Sebastian, who in turn is in love with Duke. It is fascinating how the comedy of the 1600’s is similar to the comedy of today.
