Allen Ginsberg was an incredibly radical poet that shaped a generation and sparked a societal revolution. Ginsberg was not a first generation rebel as his mother truly shaped the way he acted. Allen Ginsberg’s mom, Naomi, had an incredible yet unnoticed impact on his life. Naomi had a history of mental instability such as paranoia and epileptic seizures. This is most likely where he inherited the source of his anti-establishment and crazed actions. A committed member of the United States Communist Party, Naomi would take Allen to many meetings of the meetings throughout the Great Depression of the 1930s. After taking her to a New Jersey rest home in 1941 and years of electroshock treatments and lobotomy until her death in 1956, Ginsberg was forever disturbed. This was shown in many of his poems most specifically “Kiddish” in which he wrote of a disruptive bus journey he took with his mother. Allen Ginsberg’s mother had a major and vast impact on his writing and actions and she is prevalent in almost all of his works.
