In the movie Shakespeare in Love we observe several of Shakespeare’s fictional character and several historical people from his biography. As we watched the movie I paid close attention to the Nurse of Viola. Though the nurse is for Viola, who is a character from Twelfth Night, she plays an important role in Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet. Though a minor character, The Nurse plays a significant role as Juliet guardian. The Nurse protects Juliet by keeping her secrets, and we see this in a humorous way in the movie. An example of this protection in Shakespeare in Love is when Viola leaves her fake mustache after play practice and the Nurse comically rips it off of Viola face before her mother sees it. The Nurse also tries to guide Juliet in the right direction with the consideration of her mother. It can be assumed that the Nurse was an important person in William Shakespeare’s life because it is known that known that Shakespeare did many things secretly like steal plays and have a secret marriage ceremony with his 26 year old wife at the age of 18.
