In the movie, Shakespeare in love Gwyneth Paltrow plays Viola, a young princess who’s love for Shakespeare’s writings leads her to disguise herself as a male so that she can be an actor in his play. She soon finds herself deeply in love with Shakespeare but is held back by her identity and social status. Viola in Twelfth Night and Viola in Shakespeare in love are alike in many ways. Both Violas change their gender but end up falling in love with men. In Shakespeare in Love Viola unexpectedly falls in love with Shakespeare and in Twelfth Night Viola falls in love with Orsino. Shakespeare portrays Viola as a strong willed women who is willing to seek out what she loves, but yet she is so susceptible to love itself that she falls deeply in love with the unintended man.
