Langston Hughes

Langston Hughes is a very complex artist who did many things. While researching him I discovered a lot about his autobiography that I found very interesting. While he was a superb artist he also lived in a very interesting and complex time to be an artist. He was a main player and arguably the most famous of the Harlem Renaissance, but he also had a very complex relationship with other artists. There were many out there who saw the value and art in his work, but there are also many detractors of Hughes. He was often criticized as glossing over the African American expierence and not going into some of the more extreme and stark realities. He also had a very complex relation with the ideas of communism at a time when McCarthyism was a very powerful notion especially in the artistic community. He shows initial support for the idea, but runs away from it once people start crying wolf. I was suprised by a lot of what I learned about Hughes as an artist and as a person.

Excellent discovery! Should you write about John Green in your post? You now have a John Green bookend on the blog as you were great to share him when we first studied Emily Dickinson. Thank you! Should you categorize this post in Harlem Renaissance?
