An Unorthodox & Emotional Start

The passionate, non-traditional opening of Anuk Arudpragasam’s A Passage North can be characterized by the lack of rising action, as readers are thrown directly into Krishan’s emotional adventure. The opening pages also introduce the theme of loss. Anuk Arudpragasam immediately transports readers to war-torn Sri Lanka, and they confront Krishan’s complex emotional landscape. The progression of Krishan trying to come to terms with his loss begins in the opening pages, skipping over a typical novel’s setting of the scene through rising action. While unconventional, this opening is very defining and invites readers to continue the journey alongside Krishan as he finds himself and comes to terms with his survivor’s guilt. #LitCircles #PBL #APassageNorth #BookerPrize2021
