Nighthawks

Nighthawks_by_Edward_Hopper_1942

In the painting Nighthawks by Edward Hopper, multiple examples of modernism are used. One important element of modernism is that the reader must particpate. On this lonely night there is a couple on one side of the bar, a lonely man on the other, and a bartender. The reader must participate here because the painting is a mystery, and Hopper employs alienation. Withought the reader participating the painting will never be solved and it will stay a puzzle.
